SHOWCASE
Bombazo Dance Company
Como Eres/ As You Are
conceived and choreographed by Milteri Tucker Concepcion
This piece shines a light and breaks through gender and societal views on male and female roles in the traditional Bomba Community. Bomba dates back to the 17th century, Puerto Rico's oldest musical and dance genre maintained by the enslaved and free people of color. Not only is it resistance, more than, it is liberation. Times are changing, while the community is slowly accepting the courage of men dancing Bomba with the skirt in the batey, there is still some resistance. This piece is a reminder that African Spirituality has a duality and crosses between genders and that in the Congo, it is the women who led. The female energy embodies and takes flight on those brave enough to be true to themselves, and dance as you are - como eres.
Como Eres/ As You Are premiered in the Bronx for BAAD's Out Like That Festival June 2020. Filmed at El Garaje

A Tribute to Taína Chieftess Anacaona, "Golden Flower"
Puerto Rican dance artist Alicia Díaz and sound healer Julian Payne pay tribute to the Taína Chieftess Anacaona, whose spirit of resistance and liberation resonates through today's antiracist and decolonial activism. They dedicate this work to the women who were recently sterilized without consent in ICE detention centers in the United States, a gross rights violation that recalls the devastating history of forced sterilization of 30% of women in Puerto Rico between 1930 and 1970s as part of the colonial U.S. population control program.
